What Liem did in the school holidays - Part 2

The second half of the school holidays weren't as action packed as the first half. Liem was with Kiran for 6 days...although he did have fun playing with some of the younger kids especially Oliver. On the weekend Mummy took Liem to Wild Life Sydney which was like a little zoo. Liem, unlike with ASC and UW, would not pose for photos...so the only photos I got of us were the ones that they take when you enter and charge you exorbitantly for at the exit. Anyway, hope Liem learnt something about Australian animals...

We also went shopping for manga....Liem loves Pokemon at the moment...and especially Pokemon manga where you read the book from right to left (the text is in English but they must have wanted to retain the original artwork). Anyway, it's back to school for him now and I think he enjoyed having a short week to ease into things again.

What Liem did in the school holidays - Part 1

My godparents were kind enough to take Liem for 4 days of the school holidays. Liem really had a good time with them. They took him to the Powerhouse Museum, the Art Gallery, Mrs Macquarie's Chair and the Domain. They did carpentry at home, cleaned the swimming pool, changed washers.... I think what Liem enjoyed most was swimming in the pool! Thank you, Aunty Siu Chyn and Uncle Willie!

Cooking scrambled eggs

Here is a picture of Liem helping Mummy to make his favourite breakfast, scrambled eggs.

Easter hat prize!

Every year they have an Easter hat parade at Liem's school. The children are supposed to decorate a hat and they have a parade and some of the teachers judge the hats. Last year Liem just stuck a few cut out pictures onto his school hat and wore that. Obviously not good enough. This year, the teachers sent home a note to say bring some craft material to school and the children's buddies (older children in the school) would help them. Obviously parents are not doing a good enough job decorating these hats. Anyway, we couldn't find a hat for Liem to decorate, but Khiem found a paper mache flower pot in which he drilled two holes and I threaded an elastic band through them for a chin strap. Liem did the decorations at school and he won a prize for it! I was so pleased, it was almost as if I made the hat myself!

Liem can ride a bike!

It took Liem three years, but he's finally managed to ride his bike without training wheels. We were so proud of him when he got the knack. And he's also looking just a bit big for the bike....ah well, just in time for a new bike for his birthday this year.

Lost jacket come back!

We used to think Liem was really good at looking after his things at school. Most things came home although I think this was mainly because he was in Kindy last year and his teacher looked after his things for him. This year, he's on his own... One jacket lost in the first week of school, both jackets lost in the second week of school! One jacket came back eventually, but the second one is still lost. Instead of relying on the name label on the tag, I've stitched Liem's name in huge letters on the collar of his jacket. So far so good, it's still around...

Head lice!

Liem had head lice (kutu) a few weeks ago. I was warned that he'd been playing closely with a child who had head lice. I checked his hair just by looking (and this was my biggest mistake!), couldn't see any head lice so didn't do anything. Next thing, Liem is scratching his head like mad, I look again, there are nits (lice eggs)! Treated all of us with a medicated foam, then lots of conditioner and combing with a fine-tooth metal comb. EEEK! Lots of things with little legs came out. Second treatment a week later, lots more combings and I think we are clean now. Quite paranoid now though....I condition Liem's hair and comb it to check for more head lice, especially when he scratches his head. Of course, now he loves to lie on my bed, rubbing his head on my pillow saying, "Putting nits on Mummy's pillow"... Little rascal...

Hair cut at hairdresser

Took Liem for a hair cut at a proper hairdresser for the first time. He's usually had Daddy giving him a number 2 with the clippers at home. Liem got to watch Batman on a portable dvd player although he didn't get to finish watching it. He also got asked if he wanted his hair gelled up. The final hair cut looked great, although I've taken so long to blog about this that it's time for another hair cut already. This time it's back to Daddy with clippers.

(Fake) icing success!

Last year we had severe icing failure for a cupcake decorating competition at Liem's school. This year the school is having "cake days" where students bring in cakes for sale and there's also a decorating competition at the same time. I thought I'd better practice doing some icing given the failure last year. This lot turned out quite well actually....and the trick was using fake icing. Hahahaha....white chocolate for the white icing and nutella for the chocolate icing. Both taste great, look nice and best of all are sticky enough for the hundreds and thousands to stay on! Liem probably still won't win an cupcake decorating competitions, but at least these cupcakes should sell!
